New year, new you? Chances are you’ve got your goals loaded and ready to roll. The new year is the perfect time to jump start that fitness plan and get into the best shape of your life!

Inspiration is the easy part, the question is—will you stick with it? Research shows that only 1 in 10 of us will be successful.

So, what can you do to make your dreams more of a reality?

  1. Be specific.
    Starting simple with realistic and specific goals is key. If your goal is too vague it’ll be hard to measure your progress, so make it crystal clear. Instead of “I want to lose weight”, try “I want to lose 10 lbs in two months.” The more specific, the more attainable.
  2. Make it timebound.
    Commit to something within a set time–sign up for a race that is 2 months away, a 5k, a 10k, or even a half marathon! Give up sugar for 1 month. Drink at least half your weight in ounces of water a day. (If you weigh 150 lbs, that’s a minimum of 75 oz of water every 24 hours.) Set a goal, give it a time frame, and see those results materialize!
  3. Share your goals with others/ partner with friends.
    This holds you accountable and keeps you motivated along the way. Struggling with your workouts? Grab a gym buddy. Waking up for that 5 a.m. workout is much harder to blow off when you’ve given someone your word.

  5. Write it down.
    One thing successful people do is write down their goals. This applies to any objective, fitness included. Make lists, write short term and long-term goals. Lastly, whatever you do—do it for YOU, and have fun. Be consistent, be realistic and don’t give up. Instant gratification doesn’t make for lasting results and new habits aren’t born overnight. Imagine yourself getting to the finish line of your goal. Keep the vision alive. Keep pushing forward and repeat!
