fitness apps

If you don’t want to drop a lot of money on a personal trainer, but know you need a little extra kick in the a** to get you motivated, a mobile fitness app may be the answer. Whether you want to lose weight, see how your workout compares to the competition or just track your progress, mobile apps are the ideal helper. Your phone is always with you anyways, so why not put it to work?

We’ve compiled a list of ten free fitness apps for you to choose from. Some will help you count calories, others provide step-by-step workout instructions, but all of them are designed to help you reach your goal – whatever it may be.

Here in Part 1, we’ll start you off with five of our favorites:

Great for those who don’t need a lot of frills, JEFIT gives you simple tools to track your sets, reps and how much weight you lifted. Choose from pre-existing workouts, tailor them to your desired level or build your own from their database of thousands of exercises. Each exercise is sorted by targeted body part and includes an animated start-to-end-position image with detailed instructions. This is a particularly helpful resource for those looking to track their progress in strength training and bodybuilding. Use the calendar to plan your workout and rest days, log each exercise or workout, and see how far you’ve come in the progress tracker.

Lose It!

This dual website and app helps you lose weight by logging your food and exercise. Simply input your calorie intake and balance it against your calorie expenditure to help you stay within your daily calorie budget. In addition to a calorie counter and exercise planner, the app includes a recipe builder and a whole community of built-in support to help you achieve your goals. Join peer groups or even challenges to keep you motivated.

A good workout regimen is nothing without nutrition. In a similar realm to Lose It! is MyFitnessPal. The app helps you count the calories you consume every day, as well as the calories you expend, so you become more aware of your eating habits and just how much exercise it takes to burn off what you eat. Look up foods in a database of more than 6 million items, use the recipe calculator for your homemade creations or even scan the barcode on the package. Plus, it’s compatible with more than 50 fitness trackers and other apps, so it’s easy to automatically integrate your activity data.

Short for Simply Work It, Sworkit has users create targeted workouts rather than focus on set exercise routines. Select your goal (improve cardio health, become more flexible, increase strength, etc.) and the desired duration of your workout, and the app will coach you through a routine of randomized exercises. Each workout is different, so you’re always alert and never bored. Plus, you can stream your premade workout mixes through Spotify.

Wish there was a Facebook for fitness? This app is for you. Fitocracy is a social network for fitness junkies, using gamification and peer pressure to keep you on the right track. Look up routines, log workouts to score points, even gain achievements. Best of all, your activity is constantly streamed on a social media-like feed other Fitocrats can view, comment on and share. If that’s not enough, you can also automatically post updates to Twitter or Facebook.

Now that you’ve had an introduction to the best mobile fitness apps, we hope you feel more confident about achieving your goals. If these aren’t quite what you were looking for, keep an eye out for Part 2, coming soon!
