From counting calories to step-by-step workout guidelines, each one is essentially your portable personal trainer, on hand (literally) 24/7.

If you’re trying to get stronger, this is the app for you. StongLifts 5×5 is named after the strength training program of the same name, which is based on the 5×5 routine of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mentor, Reg Park. The 5×5 stands for five sets of five reps of five free-weight exercises (squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press, barbell row) done in three 45-minute workouts per week. Sounds complicated, but the app will tell you which exercises to do in each workout, complete with video tutorials and how long to rest between sets. As you log your reps from each workout, the app will also graph your progress on a weekly or monthly view, so you can see your gains as you go.
As you might be able to tell from the name, another workout-focused app is Daily Workouts. Choose from nearly 100 exercises grouped into targeted 5-10 minute workouts for cardio, your abs, arms, glutes or legs, or pick one of the 10-30 minute full-body workouts. Each one includes on-screen instructions and a timer set to the length of the interval. The app also works without an internet connection in case you find yourself in a dead zone.
Johnson & Johnson 7-Minute Workout
Great for the days you’re pressed for time, the Johnson & Johnson 7-Minute Workout is designed for athletes of all levels. Workouts (complete with short videos) are adjusted to your current fitness level, and the Smart Workout feature acts as your very own personal trainer, coaching you through each move as it comes up in the workout. For the days where you’re looking for something more, you can also choose from more advanced workouts with varying intensity and duration. You can even create your own custom workout routine.
Got a competitive streak? Try racing against every other person who’s downloaded Strava! This running and cycling app lets you compete against others who have signed up by tracking your runs/rides and comparing them to the routes and times of other users. The best times are added to the leaderboard, and if you’re the fastest along a certain route, everyone will know! If you prefer to compete against yourself, Strava is also a great way to track your progress. It records your speed, distance traveled, course taken and time on both bike rides and runs, so your best time is always there to motivate you.
More motivated by helping others? Try Charity Miles. This app tracks runs, walks and bike rides and then donates money for every mile you complete. Simply choose which charity you’d like your workout to benefit and corporate sponsors will make donations on your behalf. Get your friends involved, too! The more people use the app, the more the money adds up.
