Keto Academy Everything you need to know to be successful on a ketogenic diet.

THE KETOGENIC DIET

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein and very low-carb diet. The traditional macronutrient breakdown is 75% daily calories from healthy fats, 20% from protein and 5% from carbs.

RAPID WEIGHT LOSS

The ketogenic diet is best for those trying to lose weight quickly, not for those trying to maintain their weight or put on muscle. By restricting your carb intake, you force your body to use fat for fuel instead of its normal energy source – the glucose from carbs. This allows you to burn off unwanted fat at a rapid pace, even without the addition of exercise.

OUR KETO EXPERT

Dr. Brett Osborn is a neurosurgeon, fitness enthusiast and nutrition expert. At his clinic in Florida, he helps patients lose weight using the ketogenic diet. He also happens to be a childhood friend of the BPI Sports co-founders. His guidance and expertise have helped us formulate each of the supplements in our ketogenic line.

ADDING SUPPLEMENTS

Keto dieters face multiple challenges. First, it can be difficult to get 75% of your daily calories from healthy fats. Supplements that contain essential fats offer a convenient way to help meet your macros. Second, as your body transitions from using carbs as fuel, you may experience fatigue. Supplementing with caffeine and exogenous ketones like BHB salts can help you feel more energized.

KETO FAQs

WHAT IS KETOSIS?

In short, ketosis is the low carb state your body enters on a ketogenic diet. When your body is in ketosis, it burns fat for fuel instead of glucose.

WHY DOES THE BODY BURN FAT ON A KETO DIET?

When your body is in ketosis, it transitions from using glucose (carbs) as its primary source of fuel to using ketones (fats). The liver breaks down the fats you eat, as well as body fat, to provide the energy we need.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET INTO KETOSIS?

It typically takes two to seven (2-7) days for the body to enter into ketosis, depending on your body type, activity level and the foods you eat.

WHAT IS THE KETO FLU?

The so-called keto flu is a term used to describe symptoms common with the transition to ketosis. As your body adapts to using fat for fuel instead of glucose, you may feel fatigued, get headaches or feel “foggy.” Combat these symptoms by drinking a gallon of water a day and supplementing your diet with extra electrolytes and exogenous sources of ketones.

WHAT ARE MCTs?

MCTs stands for medium-chain triglycerides. They are a form of saturated fatty acid that the body absorbs and metabolizes faster than the long-chain triglycerides found in vegetable oils and animal fats. They are sent directly to the liver, where they have a thermogenic effect that may result in an increase in energy and a boost in metabolism. These “healthy” fats can also help support heart health and cognitive function.

WHAT ARE BHB SALTS?

BHB stands for beta-hydroxybutyrate. It is a type of ketone produced in the liver that the body uses for energy in place of glucose (carbs). You can also supplement with BHB salts to boost the body’s fat-burning abilities.
